Drywall Contractor in Gurley, AL

Drywall repair for Gurley — including the moisture problems that come up from underneath the house.

Gurley sits east of Huntsville where the valley narrows toward the Paint Rock, a small town with a long history and a lot of houses that have been standing a while. Most of them sit on crawl spaces rather than slabs, which is normal for older construction all through this end of the county — and it produces a category of drywall damage that has nothing to do with a leak. Huntsville Drywall works all over Gurley and the surrounding hollows, and this is the problem we most often get called about without the homeowner knowing that's what it is.

The Damage That Comes Up From Underneath

Here's the pattern. The drywall along an exterior wall — usually behind a bed, a sofa, or a bookcase, somewhere air doesn't move — develops dark speckling, or the paint starts to look faintly blistered, or there's a musty smell in a room that's never had a leak in it. Nobody spilled anything. The roof is fine. And yet the board is damp.

What's happening is a vented crawl space doing exactly what it was designed to do in a climate where it doesn't work. Humid summer air is drawn into the crawl, hits the cooler surfaces under a house that's being air conditioned, and condenses. Bare earth adds its own moisture continuously. That damp air rises through the floor system into the wall cavities, and drywall — paper-faced gypsum — is happy to hold it. Push a piece of furniture tight against an exterior wall and you've stopped the only air movement that was drying that surface. Mold follows, on the back of the board first, where you can't see it.

We can replace the affected board, and we will. But the honest advice comes first: if the crawl space is bare earth, unvented-but-damp, or holding water in spring, the fix is down there — a proper vapor barrier, drainage, and in a lot of cases sealing and conditioning it rather than venting it. Replace the drywall without that and you're buying the same repair again in two years. We'd rather tell you the order to do things in than sell you the second half of it twice.

Small Town, Straight Answers

The rest of our Gurley work is the ordinary list — a hole, a hallway of nail pops, a ceiling stained after a storm came through the gap, a room somebody wants brought back. We price it plainly, and because we're covering some distance to get out here, it's genuinely worth walking the whole house with us and marking everything at once. Every visit carries the same setup and cleanup cost, so a bundled list is dramatically cheaper per repair than three separate trips. And if a stain turns out to be dry, firm, and fixable with a can of stain-blocking primer, we'll say so and leave you to it.

Common Questions

Drywall Questions from Gurley Homeowners

There's dark speckling on my wall behind the couch. What is that?

Usually mold, and usually a moisture problem rather than a leak. An exterior wall with furniture pushed against it gets no air movement, and if damp air is rising from a crawl space the drywall holds that moisture. It commonly starts on the back of the board where you can't see it. Worth looking at sooner rather than later.

Will replacing the drywall fix it?

Only if the moisture source is fixed first. If the crawl space is bare earth, damp, or holding water in spring, new board will be in the same condition within a couple of years. The real fix is down there — vapor barrier, drainage, and often sealing and conditioning the crawl rather than venting it. We'd rather tell you that order than do the repair twice.

Does a musty smell mean I have mold?

It's a strong hint, particularly in a room with no history of leaks. Musty smell plus an exterior wall plus furniture against it plus a crawl space underneath is a very common combination around here. A moisture meter tells you quickly, and we check that as part of the free estimate.

Is Gurley too far out for a small job?

No, and there's no travel charge. But it's worth batching: walk the house with us and mark everything, because several repairs in one trip cost far less per repair than separate visits.
