Almost nobody in Huntsville has one. Homes here sit on slabs or on crawl spaces, and that changes where moisture comes from and what we do about it. In a basement market, the water risk is at the bottom of the wall. Here it comes up through the floor system from a damp crawl space, or it condenses on the back of drywall on an exterior wall in August when a hard-running air conditioner chills the cavity below the dew point of the humid air working its way in from outside.
So we look at the crawl space before we hang a ground floor. If it's vented, bare-earth, and holding standing water in spring, board is going to spend its life absorbing moisture from underneath — and the fix is a vapor barrier and drainage, not a thicker coat of paint. Where the risk is real we specify mold-resistant board in the rooms that need it and pay attention to how the wall assembly dries. On a slab, we keep bottom plates treated and detail the base of the wall so a plumbing failure or a wind-driven rain event doesn't wick a foot up a finished wall.
The Right Board for the Right Room
Drywall isn't one product. We select board for how each room actually gets used: standard 1/2" for most walls, 5/8" Type X for fire-rated assemblies, moisture- and mold-resistant board for bathrooms, laundry rooms, and rooms over damp crawl spaces, and sag-resistant ceiling board overhead — which matters more in this climate, because humid air and 24-inch joist spacing are exactly the combination that makes an ordinary ceiling belly downward over a few summers. In older homes in Twickenham, Blossomwood, or Dallas Mill, we often hang 3/8" board over existing plaster to save demolition while delivering a flat, modern wall.
What a Quality Installation Looks Like
The difference between a good drywall job and a bad one shows up at 5 PM, when low evening light rakes across the wall. Our process is built to pass that test:
- Inspection first. We check framing for bowed or proud studs and fix problems before board goes up — drywall can't hide crooked framing.
- Smart layout. Sheets run perpendicular to framing with staggered seams and as few butt joints as possible; fewer joints mean flatter walls.
- Proper fastening. Screws set just below the surface without breaking paper — overdriven screws are tomorrow's screw pops.
- Three-coat finishing. Tape coat, fill coat, and finish coat, each sanded and feathered, to a standard Level 4 finish — or a Level 5 skim coat where you want dead-flat walls under gloss paint or strong side light.
Summer Installation in the Tennessee Valley
Joint compound doesn't dry — it releases water into the air, and that air has to be dry enough to take it. Most of the country worries about cold. Here the problem is the opposite: in an unconditioned Huntsville garage or an addition that isn't on the HVAC yet, July air already sitting at 80 or 85 percent relative humidity has almost no capacity left, and a coat that would set overnight in a conditioned house can stay tacky for two or three days. Rushing a coat onto a damp one is how you get cracked, shrunken seams by the following spring.
We're happy to work through the summer — most of our July and August jobs go perfectly — but the space needs conditioned air or at least real dehumidification and air movement.
