The Bonus Room Over the Garage
Huntsville doesn't have basements, so the extra square footage most homeowners want is upstairs instead of down. Finishing the space over an attached garage, or converting attic space under a truss roof, is the most popular add-on project we see — and framing is what decides whether the result feels like a real room or a finished attic.
Three things matter. Knee wall height sets how the room lives; too low and the usable floor shrinks, too high and the ceiling closes in. The ceiling planes want to be laid out so the flats and slopes read as a designed shape rather than whatever the trusses happened to leave. And the whole assembly has to be insulated properly before board goes up, because that roof deck is the only thing between the room and an Alabama August. A bonus room framed and insulated carelessly is the hottest room in the house from June to September, and no amount of drywall fixes that afterward.
Framing on Slabs and Over Crawl Spaces
Both are normal here and both have a detail worth getting right at the bottom of the wall. On a slab, bottom plates that sit on concrete need to be pressure treated or separated by a capillary break — concrete wicks moisture, and untreated lumber sitting directly on it will find that out eventually. Over a crawl space, the question is what's happening below: a vented, bare-earth crawl pushes humid air and ground moisture up into the floor system continuously, and framing and board above it live in that.
We'll look before we frame. If the crawl space is wet, the honest advice is a vapor barrier and drainage down there before you spend money on finishes up here — and we'd rather say so than build a nice room on top of an unsolved problem. Where the risk is moderate, metal studs and mold-resistant board in the affected rooms are a reasonable hedge.
Wood or Metal? Honest Guidance
Both have their place, and we'll recommend the right one for your project rather than the one we feel like installing. Wood studs are familiar, easy to modify later, and ideal where cabinets, shelving, or TV mounts need solid attachment. Metal studs are perfectly straight out of the bundle, lighter, termite-proof — which is not a small consideration in North Alabama — and unaffected by the humidity that can twist wood framing before it's ever covered. They also won't feed mold if they ever get wet. Many of our projects use steel where moisture or straightness matters and wood where fixtures need backing.
